After breakfast and a briefing from your guide, we leave our hotel at about 9 AM. We drive for about 45 minutes to the Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro. Here we will complete our registration formalities with the national park. About 10:30 AM you will start your hike. Today our walk will take us through the rainforest so be prepared to look for towering Eucalyptus trees, a verity of birds and the Colubus monkeys. At these lower elevations it can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles can be very helpful. Shorts and t-shirts can be a good outfit for today but keep your rain gear and a set of warmer clothing handy. Stop halfway for lunch when you reach the Mandara Huts (2700 m) between 2 or 3 PM. Take some rest while we will serve you some tea or coffee. A fifteen minute side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings. Here you can have some great views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Continue the hike to our camp site. Dinner is served at about 7 PM. Bathrooms with running water are available near our camp site.
DAY 07 FIRST CAMP – HOROMBO HUTS
machame2.jpegBreakfast is served at 7:30 AM. Pack and get ready for your next leg of the trek. We leave camp by 8:30 AM, hike for an hour through the rainforest glades. Your trail now follows an ascending path through heathland where you can look for the Giant Lobelias and Groundsels. Continue hiking up into open moorlands where small shrubs are the main vegetation. Stop halfway for lunch. Here you can enjoy some amazing views of the Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at the Horombo Huts (3720 m) by 3 PM. From here you can see the Kibo summit – 5895 m. Unpack and rest while we prepare for dinner. Bathrooms with running water are available at the camp. You may start to feel the effects of altitude here. Overnight at camp.
DAY 08 HOROMBO HUTS – KIBO HUTS
Try to get some early sunrise photos. After breakfast we start our hike again. The first part of the day’s hike climbs through the dwindling heathland that blends into a moonscape as you enter the sweeping saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. We take our lunch stop here. After lunch we start off again from and it is from somewhere along here that you will be able to view your route you will take to climb to the summit. Be careful to notice any effects of high altitude. Kibo huts is our stop for night here you are at an altitude of 4703 meters there is no running water.
DAY 09 SUMMIT ATTACK – HOROMBO HUTS
Wake at midnight to a light breakfast and then prepare for your summit ascent. It will be cold during the night and you will need all your warm gear. Leaving at about 1 am our goal is to climb before dawn so we can reach Uhuru Peak shortly after sunrise. But remember this is not a race so take every step carefully as we are in the high altitude zone. We carefully hike, possibly through snow, to reach the Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m/18,640 ft between 5 and 7 AM. Here, views of the fabled crater and its icecaps are mesmerizing. Another 2 hours of hiking along the crater rim near the celebrated snows takes you to Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters approximately by 9 AM. This is Africa’s highest point, and you would have to travel more than 3,000 miles toward the Himalayas to find a higher peak! Be sure to have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends. After your summit stay at the top for a bit and then descend back to the Kibo Huts. We will have lunch and will take some rest. We will collect our things that we left at camp and walk across the saddle to the Horombo Huts. After an early dinner you can get your well-deserved sleep.
DAY 10 HOROMBO HUTS - MOSHI
